A common modern myth, perpetuated by skeptics, is that the Trinity was invented by the Council of Nicaea in the 4th century. They argue that the Old Testament is strictly unitarian and that Jesus was later "upgraded" to divine status by Roman emperors.
The Angel of the Lord and Two Powers in Heaven
Long before Jesus was born, first-century Jews already held to a theology scholars call "Two Powers in Heaven." They observed that Yahweh existed in two distinct profiles in the Hebrew Bible: an invisible, transcendent Spirit, and a physical, localized form—most prominently, the Angel of the Lord. In Exodus 3, this Angel appears in the burning bush, but the text immediately says "God called to him from within the bush." In Exodus 23, God says His very "Name" (His essence) is inside this Angel.
The Cosmic Payoff: When the New Testament authors declared that Jesus was the "Word made flesh," they were not inventing a new religion. They were boldly identifying Jesus of Nazareth as the second, visible Yahweh figure who had been walking through the pages of the Old Testament all along.
